St Peter's Primary hosts Eco Forum Festival

On Thursday 13th June, St Peter’s Primary School in Portishead hosted the 2nd Eco Forum Festival. Eco leaders from St Peter’s, Portishead Primary, Trinity, St Joseph’s and High Down all came together to celebrate their eco achievements and to learn more about what we can do to help our planet.

In the morning, pupils had a carousel of workshops where they worked together in mixed school groups.

They learned about reducing plastic waste and the importance of litter picking to clean our beaches with Turn the Tide Portishead, and were taught about microplastics and their impact on marine life.

North Somerset Council shared information about recycling at home into the green boxes and pupils had a go at the recycling race, where they had to sort out the rubbish and put the recycling in the correct boxes.

They also learnt about clean air and green travel to school with the Sustainable Travel and Road Safety expert from North Somerset Council. Pupils wrote down clean air ideas to share with others and explored how they could travel to school in a green way, which is also good for our physical and mental health.

The Garden Waste team helped pupils learn about compost – what can be composted and how to create layers of green (plant) and brown (cardboard) waste. They explored compost soil and minibeasts with the team, and got to use a digital microscope.

At lunch time, pupils had the opportunity to work with Verity from St Peter’s Church to create an amazing fish sculpture. They weaved together crisp packets to make the fish scales. The art sculpture will form part of a larger eco display at the Portishead Summer Show.

In the afternoon, pupils worked together to create an eco-declaration with ideas for their own schools and as a collective to work on together.

Each school then presented their achievements from this year as eco teams. Ideas included new recycle bins, fundraising, litter picking, bug hotels, garden work, work in the community and creating new allotment gardens. St Peter’s shared their ‘Get Ready, Get Set, Grow’ project from this year and how the children from across the school had created an allotment garden with lots of fruit and vegetables.

All the staff and pupils involved had an amazing day together and learnt a lot more about how to be more eco-friendly. Thank you to everyone who took part and helped to support this special day!
